THE HISTORY

Amatsu Orthopathic Therapy is a combination of modern research and ancient Japanese natural movement therapy that can be traced back 2,000 years. Its foundations lie in the ancient school of Hichi Buku Goshin Jutsu Ryu, which encompasses martial arts, medicine, philosophy, strategy, and religion. These principles have been passed down through generations and were traditionally shared with only a select few individuals until recently.

Presently, Dr Masaaki Hatsumi, based in Noda City, Japan, leads the Tatara lineage. In 1986, Dennis Bartram discovered the work of Dr Hatsumi, and in 1995, Dennis, William Doolan, and Christopher Roworth became the first non-Japanese therapists to acquire knowledge of the ancient healing principles of Tatara.

THE PHILOSOPHY

Amatsu Orthopathic Therapy revolves around the core philosophy of Go-dai, meaning the 'Big Five.' It emphasizes the interconnectedness of the body's five major systems: Physical, Mental, Electrical, Chemical, and Environmental. Rather than perceiving these systems as independent entities, Amatsu Orthopathic Therapy recognizes their interdependence. Treating one system has an impact on the others. For instance, mental anxiety can manifest as physical tension and physical pain can affect energy levels or the digestive system. The goal of Amatsu Orthopathic Therapy is to restore natural, healthy patterns and balance in order to improve overall health and functionality.
Gairon serves as the foundation of Amatsu Orthopathic Therapy, translating to "the bigger picture, consider everything, discount nothing, use the best available, and discover what is not obvious." Amatsu practitioners are trained to address any problem or symptom by considering the entire body. Rather than solely focusing on a localized condition, they take into account the broader context of stresses, strains, and torsions affecting the body. For instance, a knee issue may not solely result from a direct injury but could also be related to the client's posture and natural walking pattern, potentially leading to progressive damage and degeneration. Amatsu Orthopathic Therapy acknowledges the wider influence of stresses on the knee originating from the entire body, beyond the localized condition.

'It’s all in your walk, you must find it in nature, it must come from your heart and if you don’t understand Gairon, then you can’t continue'
